Group Therapy

Therapy groups are led by one or two therapists and serve a small group of other individuals (usually between 3 and 6 group members) who share similar concerns and are working on developing similar skills.

The therapists lead the group through skill-building exercises and discussions and the group setting allows the members to practice new skills and behaviors and receive support from other group members.

The SDSU Psychology Clinic offers a range of therapy groups including:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Group

This type of group therapy teaches members skills to function well in their environment and accelerate them towards their goals.

These skills are derived from Dialectical Behavior Therapy and fall under four categories: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

DBT Skills group runs year-round and is offered via telehealth on Wednesdays from 6-8 pm.

Cognitive Behavioral THerapy (CBT) for Social Anxiety

This type of group therapy is designed to help members learn skills to manage social anxiety and practice new skills in a supportive setting.

CBT for Anxiety group runs at different times throughout the year. Please inquire for group availability.

Parent Management of Challenging Behavior and Promotion of School Readiness

These group interventions are 8-week or 10-week programs that teach parents effective strategies for improving their relationships with their child, managing challenging child behaviors (e.g., aggression, non-compliance, temper tantrums), and supporting their child's success.

There are separate group offerings for parents of children ages 2 to 5 years old and children ages 6 to 12 years old.

Parent Management groups run at different times throughout the year. Please inquire for group availability.
